Mitosis

Mitosis

Inspired by the classic board game Ataxx, Mitosis is a turn-based strategy game focused on territory control and gradual expansion. The objective is simple: occupy more cells on the board than your opponent. Behind this simplicity, however, lies a game that rewards careful planning and positional awareness.

Gameplay

The game is played on a square grid where the player competes against the computer.d On each turn, a move can be performed in one of two ways:

Clone to an adjacent empty cell → the original piece remains.
Jump to a distant empty cell → the original cell becomes empty.
All adjacent opponent pieces are converted → the balance of the board shifts.

The game ends when no further moves are possible or when the board is completely filled. Victory is determined by the total number of occupied cells.

From Ataxx to Mitosis

Mitosis is a faithful reinterpretation of the Ataxx rule set, adapted for a single-player experience.

Instead of human-versus-human gameplay, the player faces a computer-controlled opponent with three difficulty levels, offering a progressive challenge from casual play to more demanding strategic battles.

8-Bit Design and Simplicity

The game embraces a minimalistic 8-bit visual style, focusing on clarity and readability.

By limiting visual complexity and emphasizing the game board itself, Mitosis keeps the player’s attention on strategy rather than presentation. Despite its simple appearance, each move can dramatically alter the outcome of the game.

Mitosis demonstrates how a classic board game concept can remain engaging when translated to a compact, retro-inspired format.
